Dear ,

Welcome to Health Registry Central where we hope to share "What Every Scottie Owner Needs to Know" about Health Registries.

In January 2006, the STCA Board made history by voting to establish a Scottish Terrier Registry with the Canine Health Information Center, better known as CHIC.  The STCA became the 5th Terrier club and joined 70 other AKC Breed Clubs that have embraced CHIC as their registry of choice.  This section of STCA Grand Central will explain the importance of registries and show you how the health of our breed can be improved by including your Scottie in a registry.

  • This Introduction to Registries includes the Action Statement that was approved by the STCA Board.
  • The second page offers details on criteria for getting a Scottie into CHIC.
  • The third page lists the Scotties that have been accepted by CHIC.  This page includes a link to the STCA Pedigree Search site for each Scottie.
  • The final document is a list of references.

This is a huge step for our breed, and one that underscores the determination of our breeders and owners to do the right thing concerning health for Scottish Terrier present and future.

Please join us as we continue to grow,

STCA Registry Committee

Introduction to Registries

STCA Action Statement

Scottish Terrier breeders and pet owners are urged to enroll their Scotties in health registries and health databases to help control and prevent disease. STCA promotes registration of clear, carrier and affected status in qualifying health registries maintained by Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC). STCA also encourages participation in health databases that may be established by the national club itself and maintained on this Website.

*Accepted April, 2006, by STCA Board of Directors

How will a Registry benefit all Scottish Terriers and their owners?

  • By providing a centralized, independently managed repository for recording health data on all Scottish Terriers;
  • By providing a readily accessible, open data base for pedigree analysis and research;
  • By recording the incidence of many genetic diseases as well as carrier and clear status where DNA tests are available;
  • By providing registration for any affected Scottie free of charge.

Conclusions

  • The STCA has embraced CHIC as the Health Registry of choice for our breed.
  • Breeders and Owners alike are encouraged to learn more and then test AND register your Scottish Terrier.
