For the last few months, the Standard Committee has studied and discussed the materials before us (including the comments made by the membership via the STCA website). We have clarified the procedure we need to follow when a change is made to the standard based on STCA and AKC requirements; and we have established a focus which serves the purpose of the Committee.
We have come to realize that there is a need for clarification and/or explanation. We also began to realize that, based on what we were hearing and reading, there was a need to provide educational opportunities for the membership, allowing everyone to bring to the forefront, not only the issues with the Standard revision but also issues that affect today’s Scottish Terrier from the breeders’, owners’ and/or exhibitors’ and judges’ standpoints. Education had to become a major effort in our future plans.
Not only did we feel education was a part of our focus, but also we began to realize it should be a part of STCA’s service to its membership.
At this point in time, the Standard has not been revised. We are not changing the Scottish Terrier. Our plan, in the coming months, is to utilize several educational opportunities to bring to light an amicable, positive, healthy, and honest discussion about the Scottish Terrier in general and the alignment of the standard with today’s Scottish Terrier. Then, and only then, will a recommendation be made to the STCA Board of Directors.
We encourage everyone to go to their personal libraries, read what has been written about the breed, utilize their mentors, study pictures from “everywhere”, past and present, and study their own dogs. We look forward to sharing with you.
