Minutes Standard Review Committee 2016 March 28 Meeting
Merle Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm EST
All members present (Merle Taylor, Kathi Brown, Darle Heck, Tom Hossfeld, Kathy Ferris and Charla Hill as Board Liaison)
Merle opened the meeting with discussion on the successful judges seminar that Kathi held in Louisville. It received the highest rating in the series out there. Discussion followed on how judges were looking at our standard and the most effective ways to try and help our breed by educating the people who are passing judgement.
Merle asked all if we felt education is our job. Is this something that should be only in the hands of the education committee? Should we just make decisions on the standard and leave it at that or do we really feel that by educating our members and judges that it would make for greater understanding of the standard and the job we must do.
Merle informed the committee that he still has not heard from the president, J McNabney.
Merle asked the committee to each comment on what they feel we should do, do we need to redo the process, work from the point we took over or any comments as to where we are at now.
K Brown stated that education overlaps by necessity, it has to. If not us then who, we are the committee that is reviewing our standard and by virtue of that responsibility it mean we need to make sure the membership understands it.
D Heck offered the historical perspective that we are in part fighting a political fight. It is important for us to decide which fight we are taking on the one for education or politics. She ran an article in the Bagpiper on tail set.
Discussion ensued on education. Is it effective? Do members want to learn? Are judges only there because they have to be? Could membership understand a proposal from this committee if they understand through education the need for any that would be made?
T Hossfeld brought up the fact that we are losing too many of our older members who were more grounded in breed education. Many of the new breeders are coming in and not having access to education which he believes we need to do to help the great understanding of our standard.
K Brown explained that there will be an education seminar at the upcoming Rotating. That led to some discussion about how that might help by teaching people how to evaluate their own dogs. More conversation on educational experiences.
K Ferris agreed on the need for education to help members understand the proportionality of our standard. She also related information on the board discussion of the committee’s status. She also mentioned that membership forums would be going up on the website and that might help in creating more conversation. She also thought it might be useful for Tom to send his proportion device out east for the rotating. It was used in CA with great success.
Discussion on possible Scottie weekend without Scotties. Similar to some of the “congress” that are held in other parts of the world.
Next meeting date will be May 23rd at 7:30 pm EST
Meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm EST
