NEW Bladder Cancer (TCC) Screening Study at Purdue University.
The title of the new study is Screening and Early Intervention to Positively Transform the Management of Urinary Bladder Cancer in Scottish Terriers, conducted by Dr. Debbie Knapp, a familiar name to many Scottie owners and the HTF. Dr. Knapp plans to follow a population of 100 or more Scotties over a 3-year period with twice-a-year screenings, to detect the earliest changes in the bladder, even before there are symptoms noticed by the owner. The ultimate goal of this study is the development of a successful and routine screening protocol for Scotties and other high-risk breeds, leading to early intervention when needed, using a relatively low risk medication.
This protocol may save the lives of thousands of dogs, reduce the side effects from traditional cancer treatment, and will help to lower health care costs for the owners.
Who is eligible? Any Scottie 7 years of age or older, with no evidence of urinary tract disease, in good health, with no diagnosis of any cancer or major organ dysfunction. Must be able to travel to one of 3 locations in the Midwest US. Screenings will begin after September 1, 2014, and will be held every 6 months for 3 years. The procedure will include:
Urinary Tract Ultrasound
Urine collection by free catch for urinalysis and other urine tests.
Blood collection for routine chemistry and other tests.
Informed consent paperwork to be signed by the owners.
There will be no charge to the owners for these procedures.
A full article with much more detail appears in the STCA's Bagpiper Issue #3, page 43.
STCA Legislative Update
This WrapUp legislation report suggests three articles of interest from the AKC.
#1 Election season is right around the corner. We need the best dog-friendly candidates elected! AKC PAC researches and seeks out these candidates regardless of party affiliation - just who is the best choice for our interest as conscientious breeders. Please consider a donation to the AKC PAC, no matter how small it will help make a difference! Read more here: AKC_PAC_2014_Flyer.pdf
#2 One of the more frequent things I hear is, "I have tried to contact several breeders and they don't call back." This is not just a Scottie-dom.)
Some of these potential puppy buyers end up going to the uneducated back yard breeders, and some end up being anti-AKC breeder because they feel snubbed. As breeders, let us take a little more care in promptly responding with a courtesy call-back and educate people as to why waiting for a quality puppy from a responsible breeder is worth the wait. So I suggest that this is an opportunity to remake ourselves in an even more positive light.
Read more here: The Value of Responsible Dog Breeders, "One of the most effective ways to ensure dogs are placed in safe, loving environments is to support responsible breeders." value.pdf
#3 - Another good read is learning how a bill becomes law. "This is a summary of typical legislative procedures, which will vary depending on your state and the specific circumstances. Contact the US Capitol or your state legislature to learn more about every step in its legislative process. City, county, and metropolitan governments utilize different procedures, and local lawmaking processes may be significantly different from place to place. Contact local officials for details."
