We're under construction! After nearly 5 years and over 50 million hits, the STCA website is undergoing some revisions to keep it technically current. The underlying content management software is being upgraded to Joomla Version 3 so we can maintain technical support. The Web Committee will make the change as seamless as possible. All the functions, features and content you now enjoy will carry forward. Don’t be surprised when the look-and-feel changes a bit as the page template and plug-in software are upgraded. We expect the cutover to occur within a couple of months. Thank you in advance for your patience. |

Scottie Health Tips .. a bout of diarrheaIf you’re a scottie owner, you’ve doubtless seen your pet experience a bout of diarrhea, which is technically defined as bowel movements that happen more frequently than normal and tend to be loose and watery. When this happens, how do you know if the cause is something to worry about? And should you treat this at home or rush to the vet? The right answer depends on a few factors – the characteristics of the stool, how often a bowel movement occurs, if there are other symptoms, and how long it’s been going on without any improvement. An irritation of the intestinal lining is the most likely cause of diarrhea, making food transit quickly through the tract – instead of the normal 8 hours passage time through the small intestine. Any sudden diet change – even different water – can cause this, as can a food allergy that can develop at any age. Eating the “wrong thing” – dead grubs, grass, birds, spoiled food, etc. – can also be a trigger. More serious problems come from ingestion of cleaning products, paint or caulk, or other chemicals. Diarrhea also results from some intestinal parasites, viruses and other pathogens; this is called infectious enteritis. Remember that diarrhea is a symptom, not a disease, so the key is to identify the cause. If the condition is acute – began recently with only one or two episodes – and the dog is otherwise healthy, try treating at home by withholding food for 12 to 24 hours, but give a small amount of water or ice cubes every hour or two. You can also use home remedies to treat the diarrhea. For an average-sized Scottie, give 2 to 3 teaspoons of Kaopectate every 4 to 6 hours or, if you have access to lomotil, an anti-spasmodic drug, give 1 tablet three times a day. If the diarrhea stops, feed a mixture of boiled hamburger (rinse with hot water to remove fat) and cooked rice in frequent, small meals for about three days; you can also add some boiled eggs or a bit of cottage cheese if these are tolerated. If your dog has diarrhea for more than 24 hours, if it contains more than a small spot of blood, or if he’s also vomiting, has a fever, or is drooling or shaking, skip the home remedies and take him to the vet. It’s helpful for a diagnosis to track the frequency of the diarrhea, and also note characteristics of the stool – is it very watery, or foamy? Does it contain excess mucus, a shiny or jelly-like material? Is the odor especially foul or just the usual stool odor? Scotties are tough and most cases are easily resolved, but always turn to your vet for help if the condition doesn’t improve rapidly or gets worse. D.G. Carlson, DVM and J.M.
