Strategizing for our future....
In 2016 STCA members began a discussion about declining AKC registrations of Scottish Terriers. We have just scratched the surface with the question, "Where Have All the Scotties Gone?"
That question raises a whole host of other questions. What IS happening with our breed? Its health? Its longevity? The sport as a whole? What is the health of the STCA and its internal and external communities? While anecdotal comments and love for the breed stimulate good conversation, they do not always lead to a good plan for the future. In order to formulate a clear plan, we need concrete data, examination and discussion of the data, and the contributions of Scottie owners from within and outside the STCA, all of whom represent a population diverse in interest, history and expertise. It is time that we look inward at who we are, where we are, and where are we going. Without looking within, we cannot move forward.
After 2016 Montgomery weekend, one of my commitments to the club was to form a strategic committee with the clear objective of providing a roadmap to help guide us into the future. To that end, in November, the STCA Board of Directors approved the formation of an ad hoc Committee for Strategic Planning,co-chaired by Marcia Dawson DVM and Michael Bishop PhD.
The Committee’s stated mission is to factually examine the decline in AKC registrations of Scottish Terriers over the past several decades and to propose strategies for the preservation and advancement of the breed. Marcia and Michael are now completing formation of the committee, clarifying objectives, and setting a time-line for the coming months.
The Committee will bring an interim report to the STCA Board in August 2017and will present an in-depth final report to the membership at Montgomery weekend in October 2017.
I am optimistic that the Committee’s resulting plan will become a compass for the club's future direction and provide recommendations for the preservation and growth of the Scottish Terrier– a breed that can do extraordinary things!
Looking forward to building on a very important strategic body of work, Lori
